Hi all
I have 4 geese, one of which I know is a goose as she has been laying for the last couple of weeks. I am unsure as to the gender of the other three. Any advice on sexing them?

Hi Michael,
I don't have geese myself but I have read that geese are hard to sex but look at the size of the birds within the group (the males are generally bigger) and by the fact that if you get them in a huddle, its more than likely that it will be the ganders on the outside of the group. Also the noise that they make as the ganders will make a hissing noise and stick their necks out whilst doing this. Male geese can have longer necks and larger heads. I also read that on the toulouse goose the beak on a male is kind of greyish colour and on the female it is kind of a bright orangish colour - I don't have geese myself so this is only what I have read. This is regarding toulouse geese, what breed are your geese?
Kind regards

Hello Micheal, I agree with everything Sara has said. I have embden and the male walks about with the chest out and strut, with the head up or down the back pointing downwards, you know just like young fellas!! The girls are much calmer and will always stay at the back. If you have a pond it is much easier to tell as the males have a swan like posture , the females are much like ducks in posture flat backed.Look forward to hearing all about them , regards Mama.
Thanks Sara
I think there Embden Geese, although it is difficult to be certain. One or two of them have the upright carridge commmon to Chinese Geese.
Regards,
Michael
Hi Michael, I shall send Sara a pic of mine so you can compare. When she has time she will post it . Can you send her a pic of yours so we can all have a look at your lovely geese ? Regards Mama.
Hi Michael, I thought Chinese geese had a bobble on the beak or does that not apply to all of them. Have sent some pics, not very good, but you should get an idea of what embdens look like. As far as I know mine are true breeds. Regards Mama.
I thought Embden geese were large, white geese with orange beaks :)
The males are larger and more aggressive as with greylags ........
Sarah
Hi Sarah, Yes Embdens are just as you say but some chinese are also large, white and with orange beaks but have a bobble on the beak. Quite different from Embdens which are more like a huge Aylesbury duck in looks . That is why I decided to get Embdens as I had Aylesburys in the past and loved them. Can not get them here along with lots of other species of duck.Shame. Hopefully Sara will post the pics if they are ok and Michael will see. Still no Broody's!!!!!!!!! Regards Mama.
Hi All,
Mama has kindly sent me a couple of photos of her enbden geese to help Michael see if his are embden gese as well.

Thanks for sharing these photos Mama, your geese are beautiful. I always think they are so majestic looking, that is until they start hissing!!!
Best Wishes
Sara @ farmingfriends
They are very beautiful, just like oversized white campbells of mine, lovely orange beaks and legs!
I didn't realise the chinese could be all white with orange extremeties :)
Sarah
Hi all
thanks for all the info and the pictures. I will get the picture sorted soon.
I think our geese are Embden, more so than the Chinese variety. The pictures will tell the tale.
Have to go now, some of my ducks are out in the garden and I am trying to soe carrots. Their help is somthing I can do without!
Before I go, has anyone heard that ducks are good for keeping slugs at bay?
Regards
Michael
They certainly do eat them, and the only ones I find in my garden are under pots!
Sarah
Hello Michael. As Sarah says they eat slugs and snails and even baby moles if they can get at them which mine did.!!!!Regards Mama
Hi All,
My slug and snail numbers have declined since keeping ducks. I even saw one of my ducks with a toad/frog in her mouth - was not impressed but she was obviously pleased with herself!
Hope you've all had a good weekend.
Kind regards
