    Hi all

I recently purchased week old chicks (18) I have them in a box which is a metre square. They have water and food. Two of them died suddenley and with no apparent symptoms. They were light sussex breed. The rest of them seem to be thriving. They have a lamp for heat at night and are indoors.
Any ideas what could be wrong??

  2. Hi Michael,
Sorry to hear about the chicks that were unwell and didn't make it. Chicks can die of coccidiosis http://farmingfriends.com/coccidiosis-in-chickens/
Are they huddling together in the day if so they need heat in the day. If they are huddling together as if they are cold then they could have died from being suffocated as sometimes they all pile on top of each other and squash the ones underneath who can't breathe. also were they eating and drinking as sometimes they can die of starvation or dehydration as they don't get to the food and drink.
Glad to hear the rest are ok.
Sometimes some of them just don't make it and it's nothing to do with us as things can get passed to the embryo in the incubator and also the genetics of the adults can affect the chicks. Some chicks are just weaker and if they struggled to get out of the shell then this can affect them sometimes.
    Keep us posted.
    Kind regards

  4. Hi Michael,
Hope your chicks are doing ok. Yes chicks can get too warm and then they can become dehydrated.
    Hope they are thriving.
    Kind regards
