I have now hatched 2 batches of 6 Lavender Araucana chicken eggs - both from different suppliers. I had never done this before. I only got 2 chicks from the first batch and now 3 today from the second batch.
Of the first batch which hatched 4 weeks ago, 2 didn't develop, 2 pipped and 12 hours later had got no further so I helped them hatch (now doing really well), and 2 did nothing - so 24 hours after the first 2 were hatched I cracked these at the round end to find the beak and they were fully developed but there was no movement. Do you think they were stuck and couldn't get out? Or should I have left them longer?
Of the second batch which hatched today, all 6 candled as developing at 10 days. When I got home from work this afternoon there was 1 chick hatched and dry, then at tea time 2 more had pipped. I was so worried from last time that I helped these 2 out this evening and they seem ok so far. Of the other 3, I again made an air hole at the round end - 1 hadn't developed at all, 1 had developed a little but not fully and the last had fully developed - it wriggled in the shell and not knowing what else to do I helped it hatch but it didn't make it. There seemed to be still some yolk sack not absorbed near its tummy. Now I feel awful and really guilty for hatching it too early when it might have been perfectly fine. It was so sad to see it not moving in the incubator.
I was so worried about leaving them too long if they couldn't get out if humidity wrong that I was probably interfering too much.
What is your advice? If I can bring myself to do this again! How long do you leave them for when they have pipped? How long do you then leave the other non-pipped eggs for after the first ones have hatched? Can the humidity ever be too high for hatching?
Hope you can help.
