    Dear Friends,
For the last two days we have had 'duck egg' blue eggs. Can you get blue eggs from Aylesbury ducks? They seem smaller then the other ladies eggs. I am wondering if one of William's sisters has started to lay. William and his 5 sisters are about 20 weeks.

    Regards Janet

Hi, some runner ducks lay "duck egg blue" eggs and of course mallards. I didnt know aylesburys did. I thought they were white like the duck.

Hello Janet, I had Aylesburys and they laid white eggs. I am not sure they were true breeds or crossed with Pekin as they somtimes are. The reason I think they may not have been true is that they had orange bills and not pink or flesh coloured.Mine did start laying at 20 weeks and were good sitters. May your problems get less each day. Regards Mama

    Hi Mo,

The eggs might be more green as opposed to blue/green. The duck house on the pond is not used on a night as its seen as a place of incarceration. The duck house is cleaned out and open all the time. We have seen William's sister going in and out through the day when nobody is near them. At the moment we have no wild bird's on the pond otherwise I would think it could be Mallards laying eggs.

William and his sisters are very large Aylesbury's pure white with orange beaks (just been out to check)!

PS: We have one more big big problem, we have a 17 year old dog called "Spice" she's dying she hasn't eaten for approx 4 days and is now on water. She's bright enough in herself but she's slowly getting weaker. I've been up throught the night with her fussing round her. I wouldn't care she isn't mine she's my daughters and she is getting a goodnights sleep!!!! When will it end????

Hi Janet, What does the vet say about Spice? If she isn't eating and is getting weaker and there is no obvious and certain cure I am afraid I would recommend that you put her out of any misery and have her euthanased ASAP' If there is hope then dextrose solution (available from the chemist as dioralyte) will help with giving her some energy. Sorry not to be more optimistic.
    Best wishes
    Sallie.

    Hello Janet,
If shes not eating, she has given up and you really should be kind to her and take her to the vet to be released. It's very sad and a hard decision but its the kindest thing to do.

    Hi Janet
Sorry to hear about Spice, you have had a trying time recently.
I had the same with Benji the last labrador I had. His time had come and the Vet came to the house and put him to sleep there. It is not easy but you will get the strength.

    Love
    Lorna.

    Dear All,

Spice went to heaven this tea time. We seem to have found a good vet. Spice had a brilliant day and she seemed to have rallied round, she actually started eating again. But the vet said she was tired and needed to go.

She loved to go down the disused railway track with me on the golf buggy. It was a beautiful afternoon here so I bundled her on the seat with me and the pair of us plus Daisy the dog went down the track. It was lovely for her as she was still alert in her mind. We then took her in the car to the vets and he actually came out to the car where she lay and put her to sleep, she wasn't stressed in anyway and was gone in seconds. We brought her back home and she has now got a lovely resting place in the paddock to the side of the house.

    Thankyou all so much. xx

Ah that was a good way to say goodbye. Its very sad, particularly as she had a better day today, but she is now at peace.
    Thinking of you.

Hi Janet, How lovely, I always have mine done either in the car or at home as I feel those are places they know. It is amazing how peaceful it is when the vet puts them to sleep, what a shame we can't do this for people who are terminally ill. So sorry you lost Spice but what a joy we can do this for them.
    Best wishes

Hi Janet, You have been very brave, it really is the hardest thing to do. I do agree Sallie we should be able to do this for humans also. It is often said if it was an animal we would have them put to sleep. Mama

Yes Sallie and Mama I agree with you too, animals very often get the better deal.
I've been there too (but a with a cat), it's incredible how quickly they go and with no suffering.
I'm sure your days will seem a bit brighter very soon Janet and at least you should start to get some sleep again.
    Best wishes

    Dear Friends,

Thankyou for your kind words. We have all been there many times and will be there in the future making awful, sympathic decisions for our animals. As you say humans don't get that chance unless we go to Switzerland!!

An update on the green eggs (we have now decided that they are more green than blue) we have now got three. The eggs are the same size and colour as a mallard's. But we havn't seen any just lately, so we have put the eggs back into the duck house and are going to monitor what happens. Will let you know.

Many thanks to muraty for the message, Blue Swedish ducks sound beautiful, will have to look them up on google.

PS: As of today's I have no new problems, William's seems perfect with his sisters and the duck with the prolapsed womb - well its not popped back out since I popped it back in. So no news is good news, her sister the one with the lump on the foot remains the same and we continue to monitor her.

    Best Wishes, Janet

    Dear All,

There are now 4 green eggs in the duck house and we still don't know the culprit Malard or not that is the question.

I am going away for a weeks holiday so will update you all on my return. Going to Skegness in Lincolnshire with grandaughter and grandson and husband, (what have I let myself in for)!!!!!

    Best Wishes, Janet x

Hi Janet, it must be the mallard. The size will also be a clue- mallards eggs are about the size of a med-large hens egg and an aylesbury would be larger and white :)
    Have a lovely holiday

  23. Hi Janet,
Only just read your note about Spice - glad you had a lovely day with her and that the end was peaceful and quick.
    Have a good time away.
Interesting to hear about the diffeent egg colours for ducks. My khaki campbells lay white eggs.

    Dear All,

I'm back from my holiday. Thanks for all your good wishes.

The update on the greeny/blue eggs is that they are William's sisters eggs. He has 5 sister's. They would are about 20/21 weeks now. The eggs are the size of normal hen's eggs and are all still very much greeny/blue.

My husband read somewhere that ducks can lay green/blue eggs but they will always be green. Whereas ducks that lay white eggs will always be white.

    I will keep you posted.

    Regards

    Janet
