After following the story of Sarah's ducklings this morning as they hatched, I have just been out to check on our Daisy duck sitting on her nest by the pond and guess what ..... there was a little duckling peeping out from under mum!!!!! She is a week early so my calculations were clearly all wrong. Have only seen one so far, but he has burrowed back under mum again and Daisy has gone to sleep. Sooooo excited

  5. Hi all,
Delighted to hear this Ken - your duck saga just keeps on going!
Mo I'm like you waiting for a duck, hen, quail or guinea fowl (don't mind which!) to go broody!

    Hi All
This morning I could hear lots of cheeping coming from the box and at 5.30 Daisy brought two ducklings out onto the pond for their first swim. No signs of any others, but I could see several eggs still in the nest. Daisy took the ducklings back onto the nest after 10 minutes and has made several more short swims since then. I am hoping that she perseveres with the other eggs.

    Hi All
I am sure that some of you can help me with this. Daisy has spent a lot of time outside with the two ducklings today but when she takes them back on the nest and they are settled under her, she is continually calling, but very quietly. Do you think she could be responding to noises coming from the eggs and perhaps encouraging them, or am I just clutching at straws? I have not had a situation like this before.

Not sure Ken, but when Grace hatched hers she did continue to talk to the goslings under her just as she did when they were hatching. How is your foot ? Regards Mama

Yes, Mattie was talking to hers in the eggs before they hatched.

Thanks for that information. I will not disturb the eggs yet as she is still sitting on them (despite her absences and two flights to the lake today). Because of the egg issue, I am inclined to leave the ducklings and Daisy on the nest tonight instead of moving them into the greenhouse.
Thanks for asking Mama. My foot was very bad this morning but seems a lot better this afternoon and I am going to try to walk the dogs. I will also try to drive later today as I am supposed to be picking up daughter and hubby from Gatwick tomorrow at 5am.

Kind thought Sarah, and it would have been lovely to see the little ones too, but 5am is just plain antisocial. Pity we didn't have this forum when I worked in Crawley.

    Hi Lisa
I worked for a defence electronics company called Thales in Manor Royal (initially at the London Road end but later in Newton Road). Commuting from Essex was no fun!
Daisy still has only two ducklings so the outlook for the remaining eggs is not good. At least, in her first year, she has successfully hatched a family which is an achievement.
Yesterday Jemima flew in for a short visit so we had Jemima, daughter Daisy, and the grandchildren all together.
