Sources Of Stress For Pigs

It is important to reduce the stress placed on a pig as stress can lower the pigs resistance to illness and disease.

Sometimes it is very difficult to avoid stress, for example when piglets are weaned the withdrawal from the sow will inevitably be stressful for the piglets.

Factors that can cause stress in pigs:

  • Overcrowding.
  • Weaning.
  • Introducing new pigs.
  • Changing feed rapidly.
  • Temperature changes.
  • Inadequate feeding and drinking space.
  • Lack of fresh water.
