Teeth Clipping Piglets

Piglets have eight needle sharp teeth from birth which the pig owner or farmer may decide to clip.

The teeth are often clipped to prevent injuries to other piglets as the piglets often fight for position on the sows teats as they suckle for milk.

Another reason for teeth clipping is that this reduces the risk of infection or injury to the sows teats.

Teeth clipping can be done when the piglets are a day or two old as the piglets are easy to handle.

Nail clippers may be used to clip the piglets teeth.

Ensure that only the tips of the teeth are clipped so that the gums are not damaged and that no jagged or sharp edges are left on the teeth.

  1. Hi Sara
Almost a month ago you left a comment on my blog – and here I am already coming to visit you! No, I’m not really that busy – just a little overwhelmed with autumn chores here.

I like your blog! I grew up on a farm – and I’m totally into gardening – so this is a fun read. I’m looking forward to checking in again – thank you.

  5. I can’t remember Dad doing this, I shall have to ask him. It was a good job he didn’t practice on us kids first!

  6. Hi Louise,
Thanks for dropping by and commenting. Steve did this job and I’m glad as the piglets tried to wriggle free and they squeal when you pick them up and this upsets the sow. The teeth clipping itself doesn’t hurt.
